WHH 8753 : The UPM story...uncut

Daily Quote : "Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together." - Oprah Winfrey-
Craving : A nice big juicy 100% angus beef burger

Looks like my blog frequency is about to drop again, the third post of the new year and already I've missed a day. So what I lack in frequency I will make up with quality and quantity! (This is my excuse for having exceptionally long blog entries) So all those griping about the length of my entries have 2 choices, "To read or not to read?" Choose the latter and you'll still be drawn back here by my immense gravitational pull that even extends to the world wide web. (Oh come on...I should be allowed to be thick skinned once in awhile).

Last night a few friends, namely Yueen San, Jee Lee and Joshua, and myself decided to take a nice long drive to University Putra Malaysia, located 30-45 minutes away to visit our friend Weng Yan who was studying there. Now there would have been nothing interesting about this except that we had decided to surprise her with our visit. So after about 30 minutes drive down and 15 minutes of searching for her Kolej aka Dorms (don't ask me why they call it a kolej...it's a malaysian thing) I parked the car and the 4 of us duly disembarked.

After a short search, we found Weng Yan's block, and since guys are not allowed in there Josh and I waited outside while the 2 girls went to surprise her with our presence. Now in a perfect, boring world they would have found her and she'd be surprise and after many hugs and screams we would have all adjourned for a drink and head home. But as we all well know this is not a perfect world and though it is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, I'm begining to suspect that God has a sense of humor.

It turned out that our visitee was not in her room. So we called her handphone only to hear the ringing coming through the door of the room, looks like the phone had been abandoned just like us. So now started the adventure and desperation as we tried to figure out where she could be and how to find her. We sat in the car park for about 15 minutes hoping she'd be on one of the buses that were returning but to no avail. Strangely though at one point we saw three different Weng Yan's on the bus. This venrture failed..we sought to look for her at nearby eateries, converting several of UPM's one way streets into two way streets in the process. Here too our search was futile.

Next was on to the library, where my friend had to lie his way in to the library on the pretense of an emergency. Fail, looks like our friend wasn't the studious person we thought she was. So another slow drive around the campus commenced with lots of slowing down by bus stops to check and see if she was there. At about 10:15pm we arrived back at her Kolej carpark, spirits defeated and physically tired and my car petrol down a notch or two. Here we resolved to just leave her a note and head home. So we spent the next 15 or so minutes writing a very long note of not much substance and then got out to go slip it under her door. This is when I heard the screams of "Weng Yan!" followed by a mini rush of two of my passengers towards a small group of girls approaching the car park. And so follows my though process at the time:

Jee Lee n Josh Scream and rush (Oh! We found her!)
Girl runs away as they approach (Oh No! They got the wrong person! So embarassing!)
They chase the girl (Oh my goodness! They two of them have lost it in their desperation!)
Short game of chase (Oh dang..we got to rescue that poor girl)
They all stop running (Oh she's given up)
They start jumping and screaming (Oh so it is her!)

And so we found our friend in the end, though it took a much longer time then expected. And so commenced the jumping, screaming, hugging and yum cha session. Now that should have been the end of it, but the night was not done...and as we were gonna leave the mamak and head back..a screw from my spectacles fell off and there went my lens. Found the lens didn't find the screw. So Joshua was going to have the honor of driving us back to the kolej, where Weng yan got me a paper clip and I used that to hold my spectacles together, all the while thinking.."How the heck am I gonna go to work tomorrow?". With specs safely secured and my vision restored, we headed back home and that was the end of our adventure.
